Growing a Gallery & Craft Industry in Gulargambone

The opening night of the Christine Townend Exhibition titled 'Global Husbandry' at two eight two eight Gulargambone

Project Summary

Coonamble Shire Council has been supportive of the 'two eight two eight' tourism project in Gulargambone which until recently held minimal exhibitions and was unable to gain approval for RTA signage on the highway as being completely run by volunteers were only opening 3 days a week. Council provided financial support in 2007 for the employment of an executive officer which allowed extended opening hours, gallery signage on the highway and two new exhibitions with several more in the pipeline. The increased hours and exhibitions along with promotion by council has led to a significant increase in craft sales and an increase in local production of craft.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
