Project Summary

Australia's first Living Library was launched in Lismore and has opened on a monthly basis during 2007. It is an innovative community based initiative which aims to bring people together in one-to-one conversation, to encourage understanding, challenge negative stereotypes and reduce prejudice. It is a simple yet powerful strategy for facilitating social cohesion in local communities. The 'books' in the living library are people from groups who have experienced prejudice, negative stereotypes, or social exclusion, and the visitors are ordinary community members who have the opportunity to "borrow" a "living book" for an informal, half-hour conversation. The Library creates a safe environment where people who would not normally meet can come together and engage in constructive dialogue. Lismore has responded to over 50 enquiries from across Australia and has received Federal funding for a National Living Library Strategy to support other communities to start their own.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
