Meet us in Leichhardt

Welcome to Gadigal Country

Project Summary

"Meet us in Leichhardt" captures the inner-urban contemporary Aboriginal experience of living in Leichhardt. This local governmnent area has a long history of radical action and social justice, and Aboriginal people tell the story of Leichhardt from the traditional times to the current day. This program was developed in the lead-up to the Local Government Aboriginal Networking Conference in Coffs Harbour, and Council has received strong support from Aboriginal cultural organisations in our region (Tranby, Eora, as well as Boomalli) and local artists (Bronwyn Bancroft, Jimmy Little) in showcasing Leichhardt as a great place for Aboriginal people to live, learn and play.

"Cities must trade in cultural cringe for a growing sense of confidence in our distinctiveness. They must try to be somewhere, not anywhere in the extended global sprawl of electronic suburbia. Cities must wilfully believe that the unique combination of events that may fuse here is just as compelling as those that may fuse somewhere else. Cities need to involve their people in making and remaking their own mythology, and create something that is truly unique." Marcus Westbury
