Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph
Project Summary
The Ryde Park Memorial Cenotaph was a public art project driven by members of local RSL Sub Branches.
Construction works in the civic precinct in 2007 necessitated dismantling a memorial cenotaph which had been a feature of Ryde for over 40 years.
A team of war veterans assembled to design a new cenotaph. Several design meetings were held between project artists and design team. The major direction from the team was for a contemporary cenotaph, one that would capture the imaginations of past and future generations.
The new cenotaph cradles a central obelisk in granite pointing towards eleven o’clock. A permanent shadow in the granite paving engraves the history of service by men and women stretching the imprint of the obelisk to the insignia wall. Within the body of the obelisk a light source evokes the eternal flame.
The new cenotaph was rededicated on 20 February 2008.
